Fine Art and Photography at The Cass 2013 MA Show

For-the-moment-on-location

Work has begun in earnest on For the Moment my MA project looking at our how we mould our behaviour with the tools we have shaped. In particular I am looking at the ubiquitous hand held devices that we all own and use and the evolving social behaviour that this is affecting. A recent article by Marina Hyde in The Guardian claims that “the revolution is over: the rude mobile phone users have won”. The revolution may be over Marina, but I think the evolution is alive and kicking.

For the Moment will be shown as part of Thought Atlas The Cass MA Fine Art and MA Photography 2013 Show at Spring House, 40-44 Holloway Road, London in September.

10×8 on Show at The Cass Gallery March 11-16 2013

80 images forming a single work called 10x8, 10 versions of 8 images

The 10×8 Project will be exhibited as part of the MA Photography and MA Fine Art Interim Show at the Cass Gallery in March. 10×8 involved 10 artists editing 8 images. This project looks at digital photography on the Web and in particular, image search on the web. It also looks at the process of creating images in the digital era.

The MA Photography and MA Fine Art Interim Show will see 20 students from The Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design and London Metropolitan University presenting their work at The Cass Gallery, located opposite the Whitechapel Gallery in Whitechapel High Street, London right above Aldgate East Underground Station.

Image Search: The Illustration or The Story

Google Image Search Results for photo of fork and bowl entitled After Andre Kertesz Fork IV

As our communication becomes more visual, e.g. 150 billion photos on Facebook alone, we need our search engines to reflect this use of visual language when we use image search to filter theb billions of images on the Web. An image is not always the illustration, it can be The Story.

Copyright in Cyberspace

Copyright symbol and text

“Why have IP at all? The reason is that creative labour is valuable and important. It is noble work, work that is worthy of recognition and reward. It is work that should be dignified with the grant of a small dollop of state power – a property right.” Professor Robert Merges from Justifying Intellectual Property 2011.

I have recently written a post on Copyright for the Digital Photography Project 10×8. Visit www.10×8.eu to read the article.

Made in Hayes

Photo: Geoff Titley – The EMI Shipping Building in Hayes, Middlesex.

The shipping building and surrounding buildings were home to EMI for over 50 years with over 14,000 people employed there in its heyday in the 1960’s. As part of an ongoing project at The Sir John Cass School of Art Architecture and Design, I am undertaking story collecting with people who worked at this EMI site over the years.

The project launches today, December 17th 2012 – “What was the first vinyl you bought?” session with local member for Hayes and Harlington John McDonnell and artist Bob and Roberta Smith.
